Prior Employers Details

Vikon Imaging
4/96 - 5/98 Vice President of Engineering
Responsible for the design and development of electronic printing systems. Printing systems consisted of electrostatic print engines, raster image processors, embedded controllers, and PC computers. Print engines consisted of electrostatic printing processes utilizing print heads, developers, coronas, cleaning stations, high voltage power supplies, and embedded machine controllers. Raster image processors consisted of an AMD bit slice raster engine and a Z-80 supervisory processor. Job server computer and pre-press workstation consisted of a Pentium PC running Win95 with the applications written in C++ compliant with MFCs (Microsoft Foundation Classes).

AM Graphics, Newspaper Mailroom Systems
1/94 - 4/96 Manager, Newspaper Systems & Electrical Engineering
Management of newspaper systems and controls development organization. This organization was responsible for the design and development of newspaper mailroom supervisory control systems and machine control systems.

12/92 - 1/94 Manager, Newspaper Electrical Engineering
Responsible for the development of machine control systems for newspaper mailroom equipment. One group under my direct supervision which consisted of 6 employees.

AM Graphics (f/k/a Harris Graphics), Advanced Imaging Products
8/90 - 12/92 Manager, Electronic Book Imaging System Development
Responsible for the development of a book image processing system for a high-speed book printing application. One group under my direct supervision totaling 14 employees.

1/89 - 8/90 Senior Project Engineer, Digital Electronic Imaging System Development
Responsible for the development of a digital imaging system for variable information printing application. One group under my direct supervision totaling 6 employees.

4/87 - 1/89 Design and Development Engineer
Responsible for the development of a PLC-based control system for a duplex xerographic printing press. Control system consisted of a central PLC controller, numerous motor controllers, liquid toner control system (US Patent # 5,003,352), press main drive control, dryer control, web transport control, power distribution, and a user interface terminal. Xerographic print engine control consisted of various closed loop process controls with adjustable print quality parameters. User interface consisted of control and monitoring of all print engine parameters, press controls, and error condition alarms.

Harris Graphics Corporation (f/k/a Harris Corporation), Electronics Operation
4/85 - 4/87 Senior Engineer
Responsible for the development of a PLC-based drive control system for a lithographic newspaper printing press. Four horsepower configurations up to 600 HP dual motor drive system. Developed a waste product identification system for newspaper printing presses utilizing an embedded controller. Developed fully custom digital data acquisition board for IBM PC which allowed for quantitative measurement of torsional vibration in press drive trains.

Harris Corporation, Government Aerospace Systems Division
1/83 - 4/85 Senior Engineer, Engineer
Developed digital control boards for government aerospace phased array antenna systems. Participated in the development of a microwave antenna test bed consisting of ECL logic bit error rate counters, digital data interface circuit boards, and microwave signal interface panels. Also responsible for maintenance and support of fiber optic data interfaces.

Graphic Arts Technical Innovators, Inc.
8/80 - 6/85 Engineer, Part-Time, Company Co-Founder
Developed envelope feeder for a sheet-fed lithographic printing press. System is primarily mechanical with an embedded microprocessor-based control system (US Patent # 4,524,691).

Patents and Published Works

US Patent 5,003,352 for Liquid Toner Supply System and Method
This system was designed for mixing liquid toner from the basic constituents and to control the density, conductivity, and temperature of the final solution. The system also provided the liquid toner to a high speed xerographic print engine. I was responsible for the design of the control system which utilized a TI565 PLC and various motors, pumps, valves, and filters.

US Patent 4,524,691 for Envelope Feeder for Printing Press
This system was designed to feed envelopes into a sheet-fed lithographic press known as a Multilith 1250 from Multigraphics (f/k/a Addressograph Multigraph). The system was comprised of numerous mechanisms for envelope feeding functions, and a microprocessor-based controller (Intel 8748) to allow for the feeding of two envelopes simultaneously per print cycle. We were responsible for the design of the entire system which entailed mechanical design, electrical design, and embedded software design.

Thesis at the University of Dayton for a Scalable Raster Image Processor design
This thesis project was a white-paper design published in 1993 detailing a raster image processor design capable of providing image data to an electronic print engine at a print speed of 600 FPM with 600 DPI print resolution and a page size of 27 inches by 27 inches. Novel techniques were developed for implementation of multiple image processors, pixel-based addressing of image memory, image memory concatenation, and rotational transformations. The publication contained over 100 drawings and resulted in 450 pages of material.

Education

12/93 MSEE - University of Dayton
Areas of study were Computer Design, Digital Signal Processing, Adaptive Signal Processing, Digital Image Processing, Electro-Optics, and Fourier Optics. The thesis project consisted of the development of a scalable raster image processor for text image composition. The scalable system design allowed for various image sizes, image resolutions, and imaging speeds when printing text images utilizing high-speed electronic printing equipment.

12/82 BSEE - University of Florida
Areas of study were Computer Design, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Filtering, Digital Controls, and Communications.
